Fear of swimming is far more common than many people realise. Some individuals feel nervous around deep water, while others experience anxiety even stepping into a swimming pool. For many adults, the fear often comes from past experiences, lack of exposure to swimming, or simply not knowing how to stay comfortable in the water.
The important thing to understand is that fear of swimming does not mean someone is weak or incapable of learning. In fact, many confident swimmers today once struggled with water anxiety themselves.
